How to film UGC video on your phone: light, sound, framing
The main beginner myth is that UGC needs an expensive camera. In reality brands value naturalness over a studio look, and quality video can absolutely be shot on a modern smartphone. Here is what to pay attention to so your video looks professional.
Light is the most important thing
Bad light instantly gives away an amateur. Two simple options:
- daylight — face a window so the light falls on you, not behind you;
- a ring light — an inexpensive solution for evening shoots and even lighting.
Avoid filming with your back to a window and overhead light that casts shadows under the eyes.
Sound often matters more than the picture
A viewer will forgive an average picture but not bad sound. Film in a quiet room without echo, and ideally with a lavalier mic. Check the sound before a full take.
Framing: vertical 9:16
UGC goes into TikTok, Reels and Shorts ads, so film vertically (9:16). Hold the phone steady — on a tripod or propped up. Leave a little "air" around you and the product so the frame does not feel cramped.
A hook in the first seconds
The first 1–3 seconds decide whether the video gets watched. Show the product right away or open with a line that grabs: a question, a problem, a promise of a result. Without a hook, even a quality video will not hold attention.
A structure that works
- Hook — grab attention.
- Problem — what the viewer struggles with.
- Solution — how the product solves it.
- Demonstration — show it in action.
- Call to action — what to do next.
Editing
For UGC, simple editing in a free app is enough: trim pauses, add captions (many watch without sound) and keep it dynamic. Do not overload with effects — naturalness matters more.
Checklist before filming
- light on your face and the product, no shadows;
- a quiet room, sound checked;
- vertical 9:16, steady phone;
- a hook and structure planned;
- the product clean and in frame from the first seconds.
