UGC video script: structure and hooks that hold attention

UGC · 3 min read

Even a well-shot video will not work without a script. In performance advertising a viewer decides in 1–3 seconds whether to keep watching or scroll. So strong UGC starts not with the camera but with the words. Here is how to write them.

A working UGC video structure

  1. Hook (0–3 sec) — grab attention and stop the scroll.
  2. Problem — name the pain the viewer feels.
  3. Solution — show how the product solves it.
  4. Demonstration / proof — the product in action, the result.
  5. Call to action — what to do next.

This structure is universal: a review, a testimonial and a before/after all fit it.

What a hook is and why it decides everything

A hook is the first line or shot that makes someone stop. Without it, even the most useful video goes unwatched. A good hook appeals to the viewer's specific situation, not to the product.

Examples of hook types

  • Question: "Still spending hours on [problem]?"
  • Pain: "If you also [familiar situation] — watch this."
  • Result: "Here is what happened when I started [action]."
  • Contrast: "I was doing this wrong for years."
  • Curiosity: "Nobody tells you this about [category]."

Film several hook variants for one video — then keep the one that holds best in ads.

How to write text that sounds natural

  • speak like in real life, not "like a narrator";
  • short sentences — they are easier to follow by ear;
  • one thought — one shot;
  • avoid officialese and ad clichés;
  • say the script out loud before filming — that is how you hear where you stumble.

Common script mistakes

  • a long intro with no hook — the viewer never reaches the point;
  • talking about the product instead of the benefit to the viewer;
  • forgetting the call to action at the end;
  • overloading one video with several messages.

The script is part of the brief

For brands: a clearer brief means a sharper script. What exactly to tell the creator is covered in How to write a UGC video brief. For creators: once you have mastered the script and filming, gather your work into a portfolio.
